Project Details

What We Need

  • Assist with the development of a tribal consultation survey.

  • Distribute the survey to park unit superintendents.

  • Conduct follow-up phone calls to park unit superintendents to expand on survey answers.

  • Provide a written report and data detailing the findings to the OAIA.

Additional Details

The OAIA is seeking an intern to conduct research into current tribal outreach and consultation practices within park units in the NPS Midwest Region.  The incumbent will develop a survey to distribute to all 62 park units to determine whether or not they are doing tribal consultation, and if so, which tribes they are consulting with and how that group of tribes was determined (whether it be ethnographic study, tribe request for regular consultation, advice from the region, previous superintendent or otherwise).  The incumbent will then conduct follow up phone calls to get information from all of the 62 park units.  Once research is completed, the intern will provide a detailed written report on the results to the OAIA Program Managers.

Environmental Impact

Tribal consultations are a critical aspect of agency policy development and decision-making.  This is an opportunity for a student or recent graduate to be involved in research that can guide improvement in consultation practices in 62 different park units in NPS Regions 3, 4 and 5, leading to increased cooperation between parks and tribes with a focus on tribal sovereignty.
